Really, why shouldn't writing be a joyful hobby? Certainly it does become complicated when thinking about changing into original fiction.ġ) Don't post it online if you think you're going to publish it as original fiction. It's a great way to work on one's writing, and there are some incredibly talented authors out there in the "for the love" realm. As we all know, publishing original fiction isn't always about connecting with anyone, or earning anything, and I know that can be discouraging for many people wanting to make the transition from fanfiction to original work. In many ways fanfiction is about connecting with audience and writing for the love. Everyone has their own view, and I'm not going to try to convince anyone they're wrong.

Personally, I don't think it would be right to put it online as fanfiction first and then take it down to publish later decide you're going to change it into original, put the work in, then publish it that way without the intermediary step of posting it online. (But note that it can be a LOT of work to make it stand on its own fanfiction is fundamentally about a shared view of characters/world/etc., rather than introducing said characters/world, the way original fiction requires.) I don't care if a book started as fanfiction, if it can stand alone and I can enjoy reading it for what it is now. I haven't dismissed the idea of coming back to it at a later time, but for now, it's resting in the depths of my hard drive. Not only that, but it's so different from what I'm currently working on I feel it would stick out like a sore thumb. Even if the book would no longer be fanfiction, I know I would always feel a connection to it as such, and as the fandom was such a pivotal part of my life I don't know how it would be to continue writing it. For some reason, I feel strange going back to it.

The book was intended to be a trilogy, but I only ever made it a few chapters into the sequel before I stopped to pursue my purely original writing. I've often thought it would be relatively easy to make a few updates and turn it into an entirely original piece. Basically only their core personality traits remained the same as that of cannon.

Essentially the only thing that stayed the same were the main characters themselves, but even their relationships with one another were completely changed. New world, new backstory, new everything. I don't know of any books to suggest, but I admit this is something I've considered.Ī few years ago I wrote a fanfic that became (decently) popular, and it was entirely AU (alternate universe).
